Job Description

Salem State University is seeking adjunct candidates to teach Comparative Religious Traditions. One undergraduate sections are offered for Spring 2025.

This course is an interdisciplinary study of six major world religions - Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Islam, Judiasm and Christianity - considering such issues as their moral teachings and practices; historical development; cultural and geographical settings; dominant narratives, forms of worship, prayer and meditation; use of scripture, images of the divine, aesthetic endeavors, and institutional structures. This course devotes special attention to these religions' and their cultures' diverse and evolving moral practices, ethical teachings and traditions of moral and spiritual development.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Religion or Religious Studies
  • Course work in two or more of the world religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Chinese religions (Confusianism/Taoism/Traditional), and Judaism
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and collegiality
  • Strength and potential for excellence and leadership in community engagement and university services

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Appropriate terminal degree or ABD
  • At least one semester of teaching a course or acting as a teaching assistant at the college-level in Comparative Religious Traditions.
  • Experience teaching a multicultural population
