Learning & Organizational Development (L&OD) works to support learning by empowering the employees to reach their full potential both personally and here at NC State in their professions. L&OD strives to build a learning organization. We support this learning and professional development primarily through our instructor-led courses and certificate programs, our comprehensive online learning system, and through our organizational development services. L&OD provides both free and fee-based programs and services.

Essential Job Duties

The Instructional Designer reports to the Director of Learning and Organizational Development. The Instructional Design position provides leadership in the area of research-based instructional design, including the creation of engaging and effective learning materials and activities, the development of assessment techniques, and the pedagogical design of learning technology solutions. The position provides consultation and course-creation services to University Human Resources and within Learning & Organizational Development.

The production environment for this position is collaborative and team-oriented. This position works closely with Subject Matter Experts, project coordinators, and other instructional professionals to design and develop courses and learning tools that build on effective practices and meet the unique needs of each project. The Instructional Designer works within the L&OD team and across groups to share and develop professional and institutional knowledge and actively helps to streamline processes to create efficiencies.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Designs and develops effective courses, including web content, interactive exercises, assessments, and online communication mechanisms, in collaboration with SMEs, multimedia specialists, instructional designers, and other instructional professionals. This is achieved through researching, brainstorming, developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative and pedagogically sound solutions to instructional challenges.
  • Provides leadership and project management for assigned course production projects, including online course development and enhancement, blended/hybrid learning design, and instructional tool and template creation.
  • Provides instructional design expertise for online and blended/hybrid course development.
  • Partners with UHR colleagues and other content experts in researching, brainstorming, developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative and pedagogically sound solutions for addressing instructional challenges.
  • Builds positive cross-unit and cross-campus working relationships to regularly and purposely push forward UHR’s strategic goals.
  • Consults with SMEs and UHR leadership on needs assessment, course redesign, and evaluation of the effectiveness of technologies and techniques in the teaching and learning process.
  • Guides SMEs in the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of effective courses and instructional programs.
  • Applies and assists in the dissemination of research-based principles and standards for quality online, face-to-face, and blended course design.
  • Gathers and reports on evidence of the impact of instructional innovations on learner success, course and departmental efficiency, and UHR strategic goals.

Other Responsibilities

  • Researches and keeps abreast of trends in the areas of instructional design, teaching and learning with technology, and remote learning.
  • Contributes to outreach initiatives by assisting with consultations, presentations, and workshops to faculty and staff, and participating in online discussions and conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of directly related work experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience designing and producing online course materials such as instructional websites, digital graphics, online resources, and other digital course materials.
  • Experience in managing individual projects including prioritizing work to meet timelines and milestones.
  • Experience in using and developing content for online course management systems (e.g. Moodle, Canvas, etc.).
  • Experience in using an array of instructional technologies including hardware and software, multimedia technologies, e-learning authoring software, distributed/distance learning techniques, and tools that aid in creating learning activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills (including written and presentational).
  • Ability to establish collegial relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies as related to teaching and learning.
  • Proficiency in using multimedia hardware, software, and equipment.
  • Demonstrated success in technical writing to support job skills training and performance of end users in a varied workforce.
  • High level of independence and initiative.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of agile project management concepts in a Higher Education environment, including the visioning, design, development, pilot testing, delivery, and evaluation of courses and instructional packages, multimedia projects, graphics, and performance aids in support of competency-based learning and performance outcomes for a varied workforce.
  • Application of gamification learning principles.
  • Demonstrated success in defining process documentation requirements in collaboration with SMEs.
  • Knowledge and experience with the Quality Matters (QM) Higher Education Rubric including; course certifications, certified peer reviewer, and QM workshop facilitator.
  • Awareness of usability and accessibility considerations in instructional design.
  • Two years of experience working in a higher education setting or SMEs in a commercial setting.
  • Experience with blended/hybrid learning design and large-course redesign approaches.
  • Experience using enterprise learning technologies at NC State (e.g. Moodle, Panopto, Zoom).
  • Demonstrated success in the development of instructional multimedia.
