The Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry at NC State University offers degree programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral levels, in addition to a combined BS/MS program.
Innovative research and pedagogy in the undergraduate and graduate curricula prepare students for advanced studies in professional schools (medicine, pharmacy, veterinary, dentistry, etc.), graduate school or other post-graduate programs, or for a variety of careers in biotechnology and biomedical industries, academia or government. Students cultivate critical thinking and communication skills in the rigorous interdisciplinary framework of biochemistry.

Essential Job Duties
The Biochemistry academic advisor and program specialist will provide personalized academic advising to undergraduate students in the Biochemistry major, track enrollment trends, assist in recruitment initiatives and outreach, and engage with alumni to build a robust program network. The advisor works closely with faculty, administrative staff, prospective students, and alumni to ensure a comprehensive support system that encourages student success and fosters long-term program growth. In addition, the position provides higher-level program data analysis for strategic decision-making.

- Academic Advising and Student Support:
- Advise freshman and sophomore Biochemistry students.
- Advise students potentially changing majors and lead intake of transfer students.
- Develop and implement training sessions for new faculty advisors in conjunction with the Undergrad Coordinator.
- Strategize ways to implement/enhance undergraduate extracurricular activities by researching and assembling information for activities including High Impact Experiences (Undergraduate Research, Study Abroad, etc.).
- Cross-training to provide backup for the Student Services Coordinator (e.g. enrollment and room scheduling).
- Interpret and learn academic regulations.
- Enrollment growth and monitoring
- Design and maintain complex data analysis of the Biochemistry program including student progress, retention, # of class seats available and seat occupant information, and student outcomes.
- Plan, execute, and report financial impacts of a new annual undergraduate recruitment protocol and other new program initiatives
- Recruitment and Outreach:
- Actively participate in student recruitment efforts, including attending recruitment events and informational sessions for prospective students.
- Develop informational materials and presentations to promote the biochemistry program to potential students and parents.
- Serve as a primary contact for prospective students, answering questions about the program, degree requirements, and career paths in biochemistry.
- Alumni Relations:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with program alumni, engaging them through newsletters, events, and program updates.
- Design/implement a new protocol for Alumni Relations including innovating new ideas for alumni undergraduate mentorship, outreach, and fundraising: interfacing with related NC State offices

Other Responsibilities
Written and oral communication will be essential for all aspects of the position. The position is a key liaison between the department and its multiple internal and external stakeholders, as well as a key advisor to undergraduate students in the Biochemistry major.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Education, Counseling, or a related field
- At least two years of experience in academic advising, student services, recruitment, or alumni relations within higher education.
- Proficiency with student information systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Banner), spreadsheets, and word processing software using Microsoft Office or Google Suite.
Other Required Qualifications
- Possess experience with undergraduate assessment reporting.
- Demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, highly organized and detail-oriented.
- Must be able to work independently, use initiative, and make substantive decisions quickly.
- Ability to quickly learn new technologies, and make recommendations for improved operational processes to support the continued growth and quality of the Biochemistry major.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of research administration best practices, through either education or work experience
- Familiarity with biochemistry or related life sciences disciplines and academic pathways in STEM.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
