Crop & Soil Sciences is a Department with diverse disciplines that encompass research, extension, and teaching related to soil science and theory and the genetic improvement, production, and utilization of agronomic and turf-grass crops. Research in basic and applied science and the engagement and technology transfer to public and private sector practitioners.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Operation Manager will act as Superintendent of the NC Foundation Seed in Crop and Soil Sciences. NC Foundation Seed (NCFS) is administered through the NCSU Crop Science Department. This position reports directly to the NCFS Board of Directors and the Crop Science Department Head. The position’s mission is to work to strengthen critical connections between farmers and consumers and support local and regional food systems.
Financial Management & Administration
Financial Management & Administration
- Manage all financial affairs of the NC Foundation Seed, including:
- Contracting, budgeting, and sales
- Bookkeeping responsibilities such as invoicing, balancing accounts, and preparing for yearly financial reviews
- Develop and manage multiple complex long-range plans and schedules within established research objectives
- Assess training needs and provide training to designated employees
Stakeholder Coordination & Compliance
- Serve as the primary liaison with:
- NC Agricultural Research Service (NCARS) and the Office of Research Commercialization (ORC) regarding royalty collections
- NC Crop Improvement Association to ensure alignment and coordination
- Represent NC Foundation Seed at various commodity meetings, providing annual reports and updates
Field Production & Operations
- Oversee field production of foundation seed for NC State University and other public varieties, including:
- Peanuts, barley, oats, soybeans, triticale, rye, and wheat
- Coordinate with NCSU plant breeders on new seed variety releases and seed increase initiatives
- Manage all aspects of planting, harvesting, and processing operations to ensure seed quality and availability
Mission & Goal Alignment
- Ensure the successful production and distribution of public variety seeds to farmers
- Maintain high standards in research and seed development to support agricultural advancements

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Ability to drive pickup & large trucks combines, and tractors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, or equivalent training and experience.
- Ability to identify off-type plants.
- Knowledge of personnel and budgetary management
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- A valid North Carolina Commercial Drivers Licence (CDL), Class A, with Air Brake endorsement or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
- Pesticide Applicators License with seed treatment or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Valid NC Driver's License required
