If so, we are looking for you to join our growing team as a Safety and Health Specialist.
You will work alongside highly skilled, dedicated Environmental Health and Safety professionals who share a common goal of ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for our employees. As part of the EHS team, you will collaborate with staff throughout the facility to mitigate risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
As a Safety and Health Specialist you will:
- Support Safety Programs by developing, implementing, and evaluating safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe workplace.
- Conduct Site Inspection and Audits of all facilities, construction sites/projects, and other work areas to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Develop and Conduct Safety Training on a wide variety of EHS-related topics.
- Compete Incident Reporting through the investigation and documentation of accidents, incidents, and near-miss event.
- Maintain Proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines and trends in safety and health to anticipate and evaluate their impact on related research programs.
- Manage the Safety Equipment Program by monitoring the supply, use, and condition of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety gear.
- Participate in Risk Assessments to identify and mitigate safety risks associated with various tasks and projects.
- Collaborate closely with Lab staff to integrate safety culture into daily operations and construction activities.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Science, Safety Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Have a solid understanding of safety, health, and environmental regulations and best practices.
- Have outstanding problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Exhibit effective written and verbal communication skills, including experience with group presentations and training.
- Thrive in a collaborative environment, with clear communication and a positive outlook.
- Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Have experience in an EHS role, especially in a laboratory research environment.
- Maintain an early career professional certification (e.g., GSP).
- Actively participate in professional associations, like ASSP, AIHA.
- Hold an active Secret security clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. $85,000 Annually
Maximum Rate
$175,000 Annually
