Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of the Engineering Technician is to focus on planning, coordinating, and scheduling essential maintenance activities for elevators, building automation, and fire alarm systems. This role supports the university’s facilities by managing maintenance, repair, and renovation projects that span multiple trades. The Engineering Technician is responsible for planning, developing estimates, coordinating bids, and overseeing project inspections. Job responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Plan and schedule maintenance activities for elevators, building automation, and fire alarm systems
  • Coordinate with various trades to execute repairs, renovations, and upgrades as needed
  • Develop accurate estimates, prepare project timelines, and oversee project inspections to ensure quality standards
  • Maintain and update the AiM database with new construction, renovations, and feedback from maintenance mechanics
  • Generate and process material requests, ensuring timely procurement and organization of required materials
  • Apply knowledge of hydraulic and traction elevator systems, handicap lifts, and fire alarm components to troubleshoot and resolve issues
  • Ensure all projects comply with relevant safety codes, including NFPA standards
  • Initiate and review bids from contractors, manage scheduling of maintenance work orders, and balance budgets, labor, and workload
  • Assist in developing preventive maintenance (PM) contracts, track contractor performance, and report results to stakeholders
  • Develop, apply, and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for daily, weekly, and long-term needs
  • Conduct time and motion studies to optimize manpower and assess work requirements accurately
  • Analyze equipment data to improve reliability, extend system life, and optimize PM budgets
  • Create diagrams, designs, and project visuals as needed for project planning
  • Verify and record field measurements, work directives, and safety requirements to support maintenance projects

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience/Education

Associate’s Degree in the assigned discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require certification. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of work methods, process techniques, resource requirements and safety considerations necessary to complete needed work or service
  • Hands-on experience and direct knowledge in one or more of the building/mechanical trades
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and solid computational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the construction, renovation or maintenance of buildings and building systems
  • Experience in the direction or planning of building repair and maintenance projects
  • Journey level experience in building trades working in a facilities maintenance and operations setting

Required License or Certification

  • Valid driver’s license required
  • North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
