We are seeking a dedicated, hardworking, individual to help us ship materials both domestically and internationally. As a member of our team, you'll contribute to APL's success supporting the Transportation and Logistics Section and FMT Group with processing, packaging, and delivery of outbound materials and shipments including exports, classified, and hazardous materials. As a Shipping & Receiving Associate you will:
- Interact and coordinate with APL partners, sponsors, and outside transportation companies regarding outbound shipments. Answer questions and resolve related issues.
- Pick up and prepare materials/equipment for outbound shipments.
- Select the optimal mode of transportation and coordinate logistics.
- Follow federal regulations and APL policies and procedures.
- Measure materials and equipment, request customs crates, and liaise with external vendors to support shipping requirements and specifications.
- Coordinate and schedule large shipments and logistical moves.
- Prepare packaging for shipments, including exports, dangerous goods, and classified materials.
- Determine freight carriers for shipments.
- Load and unload freight using a forklift and electric pallet jack.
- Prepare reports on materials shipped and associated documentation, including waybills, signature tally sheets, commercial invoices, and export/hazardous material documents.
- Track outbound and return shipments through delivery.
- Provide timely and transparent communication to both internal partners and external shipping vendors throughout the shipping process.
- Proactively resolve shipping delays by thoroughly reviewing documents to streamline and expedite domestic and international delivery targets when possible.
- Develop strong resources and relationships with external shipping vendors, including customs brokers.
- You will apply APL vehicles in the course of day to day operations.
- Assist in other areas (e. g. rigging) within the FMT group administratively and as a materials handler as needed.

Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- 2+ years of experience in all of the following areas:
- Specialty packaging and crating material handling including exports, hazardous and classified materials
- Import/export experience to include preparation of commercial invoices, shippers’ letter of instruction and other associated documentation
- Forklift Operation (ability to obtain an APL forklift certification)
- Experience in a transportation logistics/environment with direct involvement in identifying and coordinating shipments with outside carriers and freight forwarding companies including exports, hazardous and classified materials
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and walk extensively
- Strong communication (verbal/ written) skills
- Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment
- Strong interpersonal, time management and customer service skills
- Have a keen sense of attention to details
- Ability to work with all levels of staff
- Possess a valid state-of- residence driver's license. The selected candidate will be subject to a Motor Vehicle Record check.
- Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Special Working Conditions:
- Safety shoes are required
- Routinely drive APL vehicles (including vans and box trucks with lift gate) on and off campus
- Possess a valid driver' s license
- Obtain and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification
- Possess current Dangerous Goods certification
- Work schedule: Monday- Friday 8:30am- 5:00pm
- Flexible to work overtime
- Travel periodically within the US and internationally (3-5 times per year)

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
