Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Research Coordinator for the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park works with Principal Investigators (PIs) through the development, submission, award, execution and close out of sponsored projects. The Coordinator advises faculty on all elements and procedures required for proposal preparation, development, and submission and on appropriate expenditures, award specific terms, and regulations.
The Coordinator also obtains and follows solicitation instructions for the preparation of the proposals and prepares proposal budgets, gathers information to support the proposed costs, and completes all required sponsor cost proposal forms.

- Skill in planning work, ability to analyze, retain knowledge, show initiative and be resourceful in finding information pertaining to the job.
- Strong computer skills required (Microsoft Office Suite, spreadsheets and formulas, Google Drive, ticketing system, Adobe Professional, etc.).
- Knowledge of federal grant compliance and award management guidelines (OMB A-21; A-133; A-110, now under the Uniform Guidance).
- Skill in organizing and executing multiple assignments under specific time constraints and must work well under pressure.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.

- Work experience in higher education.
- Two years experience in research administration (i.e. proposal preparation, post-award administration).
- A minimum of six months of experience with proposal preparation and/or administration at a research university.
- Specialized training/certification in research administration such as the University of Maryland’s Research Administration Certification Program or a similar program.
- Skills applying basic analytical skills to review expenditures and revenues, prepare forecasts, and reconcile accounts.
- Skills in analyzing Request for Proposal (RFP), solicitations, and budget preparation.
- Solid foundation of payroll procedures and processes as it relates to research budgeting and expenditures.
- Working knowledge with various software tools and/or systems such as Kuali Financial System, Kuali Research, BA4, etc.
- Proficiency with Grants.gov, FASTLANE/research.gov, NIH, DOD, and/or DOE submissions.
- Knowledge of federal grant compliance and award management guidelines.
