POSITION TITLE: Safety Technician - Chemical Inventory

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Safety Technician reports to the Occupational Health & Training Manager and performs varied technical and clerical tasks in support of the department, specifically related to chemical inventories, chemical storage, fume hood certification, and supplies and equipment maintenance following internal procedures and external safety regulations.



RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Chemical Inventory Management:

    • Performs chemical inventories within laboratories, ensuring proper handling and storage.
    • Utilizes barcode reader to scan s for accurate inventory tracking.
    • Performs data entry into the electronic database for chemical inventory and hazardous classification information.
    • Provides basic chemical inventory guidance and database access support to lab personnel.

  • Administration and Reporting:

    • Creates new reports or generates routine regulatory and departmental reports from the database.
    • Maintains and files appropriate records for departmental operations.

  • Laboratory Support:

    • Certifies laboratory chemical fume hoods monthly.
    • Dispenses ethanol as ordered by the laboratory.
    • Washes, sterilizes, and disinfects laboratory glassware as needed.
    • Retrieves and delivers glassware to the appropriate laboratories.
  • Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Preferred: 1 year of experience in environmental health and safety.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • May be required to wear a cartridge air-purifying respirator.
  • This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.

COMPENSATON:

The expected hiring range for this position is $22.00/hourly to $27.50/hourly, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
