Job Description
- Full-time, continuing positions for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, Economics
- Academic Level B or C + 17% Superannuation
- Based at the Melbourne CBD campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University
The Economics Discipline Group at the School of Economics, Finance and Marketing, RMIT University, is recruiting up to three new continuing staff members. Two positions have been approved at the level up to Lecturer (level B), and one position at the level up to Senior Lecturer (level C).
About you and the role
The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer positions are within the School of Economics, Finance and Marketing, one of four schools in the College of Business and Law. As a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer, you will have a standard 40-40-20 workload, with 40% dedicated to teaching, 40% to research, and 20% to engagement. You will contribute significantly to the School's research, engagement, and teaching programs, with the Senior Lecturer role potentially including program management responsibilities.
We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the following areas:
Senior Lecturer (Digital Economics and/or Social Impact)
- Focus: The intersection of technology and social impact, analysing how technological innovations affect labour markets, inequality, productivity, and welfare.
Lecturer (Applied Economics)
- Focus: Using Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) to evaluate interventions aimed at reducing poverty, improving health, enhancing education, and addressing social policy and environmental challenges.
Lecturer (Behavioural Economics and Technology)
- Focus: Leveraging behavioural economics and technology to understand and influence human behaviour at scale, using tools like digital nudging, AI, smart contracts, and virtual reality.
To be successful in the position, you'll have as a minimum:
Lecturer:
- PhD in Economics (completed or expected in 2025)
- Ability to prepare and deliver programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, including online delivery, and the ability to produce high quality curriculum or program materials.
- Ability to undertake course coordination role
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with and to negotiate sensitively with students especially on issues related to effective learning
- Ability to produce internationally recognised research with outputs publishing in high quality outlets (an existing publication record or clear potential)
- Ability to develop new research initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links
- Ability to effectively contribute to the supervision of higher degree by research candidates.
Senior Lecturer:
- PhD in Economics
- Demonstrated ability to manage a large program or a number of small programs.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate large courses and prepare and delivery programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, including high quality curriculum and program materials and ability to implement innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement.
- Emerging internationally recognised research track record including a record of research outputs in high quality outlets.
- Demonstrated ability to attract and supervise higher degree by research candidates to maximise research performance.
- Demonstrated ability to manage academic program teams, supporting scholarly development of less experienced academic staff.
- Demonstrated ability to develop new research initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links

About the School of Economics, Finance and Marketing
The school began as the Department of Economics and Finance in 1990 and in 2005 the discipline of Marketing joined the Department to become the School of Economics, Finance and Marketing. As a School we aim to provide practical, relevant, and innovative economics, finance, marketing, blockchain enabled business and social impact programs; research; industry training and consulting which graduates, employers, industry and university peers acknowledge as amongst the best available in the international marketplace.
