Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The University of Maryland’s Center for Advanced Transportation Technology (CATT) encompasses several research projects that are supported by a combination of user grant funding and user fees. One of its current research efforts involves assisting the American Automobile Association Foundation (AAAF) with a study of Slow Down, Move Over law compliance in the United States. Part of this research includes processing highway camera video through UMD’s Object Detection and Tracking (ODT) software. To support this research, CATT is looking for students to support one or two aspects of this research. Students may submit applications in one or both of the following research areas:
1) Highway Camera Video Monitoring & Capture
- Monitor highway incidents and nearby highway camera video feeds to determine if captured video would be processable via the ODT software.
- Capture video using common screen capturing software tools at the highest resolution possible
- Coordinate with local Traffic Management Centers to adjust highway camera views/framing to improve the quality of captured video, if available.
2) Video Application Processing/Analysis
- Find matching points on a still frames from a video’s field of view as well as on an aerial map of the video study area.
- Mark matching points and extract their coordinates (pixels and latitude/longitude) to populate a table.
- Generate masks for specific lanes in the camera’s field of view in order to focus the ODT process on vehicles that are potentially subject to move over law requirements.
- Run python scripts to prepare data files and to extract information that will be used by other researchers.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- Current enrollment in a UMD Bachelor’s or Masters’ Degree program.
- Familiarity with basic computer applications.
- Familiarity with Python and basic mapping applications (for video frame analytics tasks).
