Veterinary Technician, Large Animal

Job Description

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN, LARGE ANIMAL, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to assist veterinarians with all aspects of marmoset colony oversight including assisting with tracking and ensuring the accuracy of breeding colony census data, including information on births, deaths, breeding group changes, animal moves, etc.; updating birth information, and maintaining cage identification tags; composing new breeding groups, forming animal pairs, and managing group disbanding as directed; participating in health checks and facility rounds, including close infant monitoring in the postnatal period; identifying potential foster dams to assist in the event of infant rejection and updating notice boards; assisting veterinarians with pregnancy monitoring of conscious marmosets using ultrasonography and updating notice board on projected parturition dates; assisting with training animal husbandry technicians on proper marmoset husbandry techniques, cage security, identifying health concerns, diet preparation, etc.; assisting with training weekend clinical personnel on the identification of health concerns, monitoring births and assessing infant health and other information; participating in the behavioral management plan, including monitoring social interactions of groups/pairs and implementing the marmoset enrichment program; participating in marmoset positive reinforcement training to facilitate access to animals within group cages, streamlining cage change-overs, and acclimating animals to conscious ultrasonography; coordinating/preparing enrichment materials; administrating oral and parental drugs; sample collection (blood, feces, etc.); prepping animals for surgery; anesthesia monitoring; and post-operative monitoring.Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent; three years of related experience; interest in and experience with nonhuman primate husbandry and veterinary technical work; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; animal handling experience; and proficiency with Excel. PREFERRED: bachelor’s degree in animal science, biology, or related field; and LAT certification. Job #24474-5
