Founded in 1746, Granville County is known for its small-town charm, rich history, colonial architecture and an abundance of recreational activities. Granville County is located in the northern Piedmont of North Carolina, about 45 minutes north of Raleigh and borders Virginia on its northern side, Vance County to the east, Person County to the west, and Wake County to the south. Cities in Granville County include Oxford (the county seat), Creedmoor, Butner, Stem, and Stovall. Interstate 85 runs through the county, and most north-south traffic is handled by highways US 15 and NC 50. Granvillle County is rural, with a vibrant agricultural base that includes tobacco, soybeans, wheat, hay, and livestock farms. There are several farms that produce a variety of produce and sell their products at the Oxford and Creedmoor Farmer’s Markets. The Granville Athletic Park has tennis courts and accessible walking trails, and partners with the recreation departments of the cities to host many baseball and softball tournaments through the summers. Some of the county’s featured annual events include the North Carolina Hot Sauce Contest, the Creedmoor Music Festival, the Butner Chicken Pickin’, and more! Granville County is located far enough from major cities to retain its rural character, yet is close enough that its citizens can enjoy the bright lights of Raleigh and Durham.
