About the Opportunity
Kalamazoo Valley is seeking a Director of Energy & Technical Career Training Programs, whose primary responsibility is to support the instructional mission of the institution and to promote positive student and customer relations. The individual in this position will also provide administrative leadership for the operations and personnel functions of the energy and technical career training programs. These programs deliver hands-on training for Wind Turbine Technicians, Corporate Training, Telecom Training, Confined Space training and industry specific safety training in academy-style classroom and field settings.
 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Hire, orient, train and evaluate assigned staff. Monitor and coordinate staff development and training programs; and, through the Human Resources Department, develop effective human resources practices.
    • Perform both short- and long-range planning, conduct research and recommend potential training programs.
    • Direct instructional services to ensure alignment with required industry skill standards. Provide oversight of competency-based teaching and skills assessment processes.
    • Direct and monitor all field work and consultative services associated with technical career training.
    • Build and maintain industry relationships through company visits, industry advisory groups and employer networking.
    • Develop course schedules, solve instruction related problems and provide instruction as needed.

 


Supervisory Responsibilities:
The individual in this position will provide functional and administrative supervision over approximately three full-time positions and a varying number of contractual instructors

 
Skills and Knowledge Required:
  • Knowledge of industrial safety standards and practices.
  • Knowledge of acceptable budgeting principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of acceptable supervisory practices.
  • Skill in planning and directing the work of subordinates.
  • Skill in building relationships.
  • Skill in short- and long-range planning.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.

Minimum Qualifications:
Appropriate education, training, experience and talents are required. An example of this would be a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of six years related work experience.
Prior supervisory experience required.

In addition to the above, in order to provide instruction, advanced training or certification with verifiable experience in one or more of these areas is also required:
    • Safety compliance and training with an emphasis on safety at heights and worksite safety with a minimum of three years related experience.
    • Mechanical specialist/millwright/maintenance certification/licensure with a minimum of three years related work experience.
    • Journeyman’s or master electrician license with a minimum of three years experience in power generation or substation work experience.
    • IRATA or SPRAT Level 2 or higher license with three years experience with repair project work on wind turbine or telecommunication structures.
    • Wind turbine or telecommunications technician with three years experience repairing, installing or maintaining megawatt size wind turbines or telecommunication structures, lines and antennas.

 


Candidates must also:
  • be eligible, upon hire, to obtain an unrestricted passport;
  • possess a valid driver’s license, free of infractions that would disqualify them from driving college owned vehicles;
  • have a general understanding of Quality Management Systems and can demonstrate operating under one in previous work experiences; and
  • be able to travel out of state for extended periods of time to deliver or receive training.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
Prior teaching experience is strongly desired. Corporate, in-house training experience and/or instruction delivered in an academic setting will be considered.

Current qualification as a GWO Basic Technician Training instructor is strongly desired.

BZEE certified Wind Turbine Technician with at least one year’s field experience in the maintenance of wind turbines of 800 kilowatt or larger is preferred.

OEM converter and pitch system training as well as certification as a trainer for safety training is a plus.

Physical Demands:
Candidates must be willing and able to perform work in enclosed and confined spaces as small as 30 inches in diameter and climb up to 450 feet vertically to perform the work of a wind turbine technician in a variety of adverse weather conditions for up to 12 hours per day when in the field. Some night and weekend hours may be required occasionally. Travel on weekends and holidays may be required occasionally with little to no advanced notice.

Finalists may be required to complete a tower climbing test while adhering to industry standards, MIOSHA requirements and college policies.

Must possess vision and hearing levels meeting industry standards at a level suitable for working safely in the environment.

Work Hours:
Core business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Field work is required and may involve extended hours and weekend work.
